It was during a long phone call to Rachel that it happened. After talking of how poorly Miles was sleeping and how I felt I would never again rest for more than 45 minutes at a time she said,
“Well I have some news…”
“What?” I asked
“I’m pregnant.” She said
After complaining about my baby for a good 30 minutes I was now reveling in the news. My best friend is pregnant!!!
“Oh, I’m sorry – your baby will be different and always sleep through the night.” I say. Rachel laughs but true to form she was as understanding as always.
“No need for sorry.” she says “You are exhausted!”
We chatted about how far along she was (1 month) how she was feeling (tired) & guessed that she would have a girl (we were right)
When her baby shower came along 7 months later I was ready. Pink, grey & white for a little baby girl.
The design was simple. Light grey chevron on a white base with a pink top, soft white bow and topped with the littlest gumpaste booties. Looking back I might have made white booties rather than pink (too much pink?)
Along with the two tier was a beautifully ruffled pink cake to add texture to the dessert table.
I should have guessed that a group of 25 women would not be able to polish off all that cake! But seeing as my go-to perfectly delightful vanilla cake recipe (from my Bonnie Gordon classmate Rosie a.k.a Sweetapolita) was the only thing Rachel was craving during her entire pregnancy, leftovers were O.K.
Games were played, gifts were opened and stories were told. As people started to leave they each took a little cookie with ‘Gillian’ written in sweet royal icing as a keepsake/snack for the ride home.
Two months later, I was able to watch this little precious pea come into the world. We love you lots baby girl.
