Keeping on the theme of firsts – this being my first blog after all, I had an idea. Miles 1st birthday party! As with any party with a baby turning O-N-E there was cake. Lots of cake.
I had spent the last year at home taking care of our (not so little) baby who turned 1 on May 16th. It hadn’t been the easiest year for our little family, but we came through it and were ready to celebrate! Miles’ 1st birthday was full of Grandma kisses, laughing faces and of course a chocolate banana smash cake. What else would suffice for my little chunky monkey? Knowing full well the way this baby mooches for ice cream I knew it was going to be a full-on smash cake binge.
Picking a theme for Miles party was the easy part. Miles’ nickname has always been some version of Monkey – Chunky Monkey, Monkey man, Monkey pants… you get the picture. So his birthday would be no different. First I had to design the cake – my favorite part. I started with a few sketches in my trusty sketchbook leftover from my college days. After the sketch, I began molding the monkey and worked my way down.
Isn’t he cute?! Originally I had though to have a pile of bananas behind the little Monkey but he took up too much room! So Plan B was implemented and the words H-A-P-P-Y B-I-R-T-H-D-A-Y were shaped out in fondant bananas. I have to say, when I planned this out I didn’t realize how time consuming it would be to make these letters. The challenge was not only making the letters look like bananas, but also making the letters look like well, letters. Several of the many banana shapes I made just didn’t make the cut and ended up in my ‘just in case’ container. So after a full evening of creating the letters while my little boy slept, I had finished them.
All I needed to do was bake the cake, make the buttercream, fill the layers, dowel the cakes, fondant them, tier them and decorate it! Thank goodness those banana letters were done!
Then came the baking.
Welcome to ….. The Planet Of The Cakes
Well, that’s how I felt after seeing my cakes completely take over my kitchen table. Now to put it all together.
Ah, there done!
The party table & birthday boy! Happy Birthday Miles!
